Weirdo Bud Vases Turned Into People

Vases with Quirky Personalities

If you have fresh flowers to keep at home, you likely put them into a vase to prolong their beauty.

You might own some crystal vases.

Hand-turned pottery can make for a lovely display.

For artist Sandra Apperloo, she takes a different approach by using this material as her medium.

Apperloo turns vases into quirky people.

She says that it is her love of tiny freckles and pastels that inspires the characters.

Each one offers a different facial expression, creating a unique crew that’s sure to bring a smile when you get several of them together.

Apperloo Calls Her Series “Weirdo Bud Vases”

Bud vases are often tall and thin, encouraging you to save long stems to let the flowers poke out from the top creatively.

Apperloo shapes each one so that they typically hold a single stem.

Some flower varieties might keep 2-3 if you harvest them while they’re small.

With the lean bodies showing off dresses with stripes, polka dots, and floral motifs, it feels like you’ve got someone watching your every move in the room.

I hope my work makes people laugh and daydream

Her goal is to help people have a distraction from the daily routine offered by the modern world.

At the top of each base, a perfectly positioned flower can serve as the character’s hair, adding even more charm to the mix.

Apperloo Creates Her Vases in Utrecht

Based in The Netherlands, you can find Apperloo’s work under The Pottery Parade banner.

In addition to the Weirdo Bud Vases, you’ll find bowls, mugs, planters, and other vessels that work well for the natural items you want to bring inside.

As for the bud vases, not all of them are straight.

Some of them curve inside or out to create even more uniqueness for your display.

It really adds up to some old-fashioned charm when you have a half-dozen of them together with flowers.

Apperloo admits that she doesn’t plan how each one looks in advance.

She decides to work on instinct, finding what feels suitable for that moment.

That’s how I can keep an open mind
