Got an Old Volkswagen Beetle? Turn It Into a Camper!
Most people recognize the Volkswagen brand because of the iconic Beetle. Those bugs even received an updated version decades later because of how popular this vehicle was at the time. What some younger adults may not realize is that this car, which was first introduced in the 1930s in Germany, was once sold as an RV.
A third-party company called Super Campers created what they called the Super Bugger in 1975.
It was built as part of a trend during the 1970s when car owners wanted to challenge the functionality of their vehicles by going off-roading in different regions of the world.
The company used fiberglass paneling to construct a small living space behind the front seats of the vehicle.
It offered room for a small kitchenette, but the car was too little to have a sleeping area in it.
The Super Bugger Retailed for $6,000 in 1975
You won’t find many Super Buggers around today for two reasons: the age of the car and the cost to make one.
If you spent $6,000 on this vehicle in 1975, then that’s the equivalent of spending $30,000 on something similar today.
A few families have maintained their vehicles over the past 40 years.
One couple took their Super Bugger to a car show in 2016, which is how most of us came to know about this hybrid creation.
They even brought the original flyer from the California company that helped them with the modification.
You might need to sleep underneath the stars when using this invention, but it also provides some added convenience during a long road trip across the United States.
The Super Bugger Could Seat Six People Comfortably What is truly remarkable about the vintage Super Bugger is the amount of space that it offers in such a small package.
With the two seats in front, an additional four spots could get added to this unit with custom seatbelts so that you could transport six people on a long trip.
There’s a small sink, a stovetop, and lots of storage space to enjoy.
If you were really in a bind, you could sleep on one of the bench areas.
The Super Bugger really is one of the most unique vehicles ever conceived!
