Graffiti Landscapes in Oil by Jessica Hess

by Cristian I

self-expression art

Others use it as a form of self-expression, while tagging can sometimes be a sign of gang territory.

Jessica Hess, a painter based in the Oakland area, takes her talent to document these urban landscapes with her unique approach in oil.

You can find her pieces highlighting the open skies of the city, the takeover of nature through abandonment, and the colors of graffiti in all of their majesty.

Hess Paints Off of Her Photographs

Hess seeks out places of decay and growth coming together around her with a camera.

She carefully explores abandoned locations and then uses the experience and her images to create something unique and beautiful in her paint.

Hess graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Her work has been featured nationally across the United States for the past 15 years.

She recently had a solo show at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco as well.

Her goal with this work is simple:

To validate and celebrate the art of graffiti.

By transforming it through the lens of fine art, which includes gouache on paper, she has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Faber Birren National Color Award.

You can connect with her on Instagram right now or see her current works on her website.
