Cardboard Creations Turn Plants into Monsters!

Greg Olijnyk loves to create robots.

Instead of working with metal to make fantastic scenes, you’ll find him in the studio working with cardboard.

Olijnyk has a carefully crafted universe that creates realism to a new level.

Based in Melbourne, his work has a slight dystopian feel to it, especially when you see pieces where an aloe plant becomes a monster flinging the robots about everywhere.

His works don’t stop with the fully articulated robots that stand on their own with each piece.

Olijnyk incorporates LED lights, glass, and other materials that were needed to pull off a realistic look.

When you look at the artist’s Instagram page, you’ll see that science-fiction seems like it could become a reality.

Who Is Greg Olijnyk?

When Olijnyk put together a piece for Bored Panda over a year ago to show off his work, he described himself as being a “graphic designer by day, a frustrated engineer by night and weekends,” and a person who took it “all out on helpless PVA glue and cardboard.”

In one stunning robot piece, Olijnyk incorporates a watch to serve as the “heart” of his robot.

It stands tall by itself, gears shining in the sunlight as if it is contemplating the next great idea to change the planet.

In another fun piece, Olijnyk creates a small pavilion with a robot sitting in a bumper car.

The sign above says, “Speedybot Dodgem,” and LED lights to make the effect that it’s a real sign from the 1950s.

Additional string lights inside the structure add a lovely touch.

The Artist Creates More Than Just Robots

Although Olijnyk’s robots get plenty of social media love, it’s the craftsmanship behind each piece that is truly stunning.

For an artist with less than 5,000 followers, it’s remarkable how talented he is!

You’ll find steampunk-inspired buildings, urban scenes, boiler rooms, and much more in his Instagram feed.

Olijnyk says that in addition to the carboard, toothpicks, glue, and scalpel blades that are needed to create his pieces, plenty of coffee and whisky go into the creation.

Each post generates approximately 700 reactions, showing an enthused following that loves his work.

How does Olijnyk get so much stability and movement for his artistic creations?

He credits the sturdiness of packaging-grade cardboard and the occasional use of tracing paper.
